Attendee Tip #3 – Money during the Teachings

Foreign exchange agencies, which convert a variety of currencies, are widely available in India these days, as are ATMs for your international debit and credit cards. Some ATMs charge a small fee, and most have a daily withdrawal limit.

There are only three ATM/banks inside of Bylakuppe settlement – one near Sera Lachi Prayer Hall and two in Bylakuppe (near the entrance to Camp 1). There are more ATMs and banks in Kushalnagar (approx. 7km from Sera and 5km from Tashi Lhunpo). It may be possible to exchange foreign currency in a Western Union Office – there are several in Bylakuppe Settlement: near Sera Mey Library at Sera Monastery, in Camp 1, and in Camp 3.

During the time of His Holiness’ teachings, the limited ATMs may be very busy and sometimes run out of money, so it may be more convenient for you to obtain/change most of your money in larger cities, such as Mysore and Bangalore, before travelling to Bylakuppe.   For additional travel tips, see here: http://www.jangchuplamrim.org/travel-guide/visa-other-advice/
